About George Grove
George is a formally trained visual artist exploring many media in his work. Born into a family of designers and sculptors with high standards of craftsmanship, his training began in the cradle and led to a BFA (Honours, First Class) from the University of Victoria. He has exhibited his art work both nationally and internationally. In 1986 he co-founded Ground Zero Printmakers, a non-profit artist-run society for the support of avant-garde, conceptual, and experimental printmaking. He led and exhibited with this group until 1997, helping introduce new ideas into a traditional medium. George also served on the board of directors of Open Space Gallery and has been president of XChanges Gallery and Studios in Victoria. In his business, Archive Frames, he framed and prepared important works for museums, galleries and archives in Victoria.
After moving to Vancouver in 1997 George worked in the film and television industry producing SMFX, puppets, and animatronics. He also puppeteered in the Union of BC performers. George has collaborated with Tibor Farkas, Toby Lindala, Bill Terazakis, Mike Fields, and Gideon Hay and served at The Vancouver Film School working with Charles Porlier in the makeup department. He also began designing puppets for ventriloquists and other live theatrical performers, including one for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Between 2004 and 2010, George took on series of contracts building mounts for Vancouver's Museum of Anthropology. This work combined his technical and creative backgrounds with his experience handling art, as each mount had to be custom designed for each precious mask or artifact according to exacting conservation standards.
In 2007 George moved with his wife to Wellington, Ontario, where he has resumed his fine art practice and puppet production. He has also begun exploring silversmithing and wood carving.
